Blanquita’s Artist Statement:

I have always been interested in people. What their stories are, their motivations, and how they express themselves through their body language, style, movements, and interactions. I see myself as a contemporary storyteller and with each portrait I paint, I attempt to capture the spirit of the individual and tell the story of that distinctive moment.

Accompanying deep respect for the subject, I explore the memories that linger in our possessions, the importance of home, the ghosts who stay with us, and our relationships. In recent portraits, I tell layered stories of families, groups, and individuals and how they exist in their homes or favorite spaces surrounded by objects or garments that carry meaning for them.

My professional background is in costume design, fashion design, merchandising, and retail. I’ve spent over 20 years at sewing machines, cutting tables, and in fitting rooms. My mission has been to help women find their confidence and to help them recognize their own beauty.

Throughout that time, and while raising my 3 daughters, I have simultaneously worked to develop as a painter, focusing mainly in portraiture. I studied at the NYC Art Students League, The NYC Studio School, and Virginia Commonwealth University. This year, I am entering my 3rd year of a low residency MFA studio art program at MICA in Baltimore.

My goal is to continue to grow as an artist and to develop a meaningful, honest, and well-crafted body of work that tells the stories of the remarkable people and places in my life so that they may be remembered, acknowledged, and celebrated. As my work develops and grows, what stays with me throughout and remains at the forefront is memory, magic, environment, loss, and love.
