Susan Best is equipped with distinctive mixed media skills, pefecting them through years of practice. Influenced by the spontaneity of Dadaism, she works intuitively and embraces chance – allowing unexpected textures, found objects, and layered formal elements to navigate her compositions. Using mostly paint and collage, she transforms abstract shapes and linework into visual stories that shift between reality and suggestion.

Like the Dadaists, found material often finds a place in her work. Words and images that emerge and disappear in the layering process leaving hints of meaning are important guides to the finished piece. Susan’s playful compositions invite viewers in for a closer look, encouraging personal dialogues and narratives.

In 1991, Best received a BFA in Studio Art from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, where she was chosen by the Art Department faculty to receive the SHSU Art Endowment Award. In 1994, she earned a Master of Arts degree from Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, Texas. Her artwork is found in numerous private colllections nationwide and overseas. She has made her home in the Texas Hill Country since 2000, and currently enjoys showing her work in  San Antonio, Austin, and beyond.
